Unity NAIDOC Week Children's Day
The Unity Foundation arranged for 300 primary school students from St.Kilda and surrounding suburbs to attend a day of culture, fun and games during 2006 NAIDOC week. A number of community members also turned up on the day, with several families bringing their kids along.
The 2006 activities included:
NRL Road Train
AFL Footy Clinic run by Xavier Clarke and Allan Murray
Yarn Strong Sista – includes art, stories, face painting (Koorie designs)
Roaming Reptiles – live snakes, frogs, lizards, turtles and crocodiles (baby ones)
Traditional Dance – 2 dancers from Kirrit Barreet taught children dance
Didj Workshop – Kirrit Barreet
Artifact Workshop – Uncle Ron Murray
Boomerang Painting Workshop – Port Phillip Citizens for Reconciliation
Students arrived at 9.30am. Each class/group will was allocated a volunteer and then welcomed by Aunty Carolyn Briggs (including a brief talk about Unity and NAIDOC) and smoking ceremony which was conducted by Uncle Ron Murray. The students will then particpated in activities between 10.00 – 2.30pm, spending approx 30 mins in each activity.
We all had a great day, and look forward to doing it again in NAIDOC week 2007!
