Doxa Breakfast Club Program
Xavier Clarke, Allan Murray
and Raph Clarke are key facilitators of the Unity Foundation's breakfast club which
addresses the important issues of nutrition, exercise and cultural awareness to
primary school aged kids. In 2008, Unity Foundation's breakfast Club program will be supported through the DOXA Youth Foundation. DOXA Youth Foundation is a philanthropic organisation which
funds programs to provide opportunities for disadvantaged young
people. (Doxa Website: www.doxa.org.au/)
"Our Breakfast Club program allows youth to connect with their heros while learning the value of a healthy lifestyle" reported Unity Foundation's CEO, Peter King. "Not only does our breakfast club promote healthy eating, but youth are encouraged to consider social, emotional and cultural factors as part of a healthy lifestyle"
Unity's breakfast
program is delivered by indigenous athletes who have been trained to connect
with young people, teach life skills and develop a young people's problem
solving abilities in a supportive manner. Students work from a one page
worksheet which reinforces 5 key 'benefits of breakfast' points and a fun
activity related to the nutrition theme for the week. We also
include a 'hot life-skills challenge' and a 'hot activity challenge' for
children to focus on at home for the week. An information sheet for parents on
the topic will be given to students to take home.
